I always have WMP open anyway and just press the stop button on my keyboard when I'm about to play CS:S.

I think by opening media player it does the same thing as that fps booster app that pheer posted in a thread once. The fps booster thing uses less cpu power than normal media player, not sure about the difference in cpu usage between the booster and media player classic though;

FPSBANANA > Tools > CS:S > Server Tools & Plugins > FPS booster > Download - FPS Booster.

edi: come to think of it, my mate closes explorer.exe before going into CSS/TF2 and he says that boosts his performance alot for his crappy comp lol, you could give that a try.

explorer.exe = the start bar/bottom of your screen (not IE lol)

Opening WMP to get a FPS boost makes no sense at all...
There is just no logic behind that as far as I can see (and read the complete article).

Winamp > WMP

But lower CPU usage doesnt really get you much more fps tbh, i get maybe 3-4 fps less with Winamp running than when i dont have it running..

I repeat, if you actually read the thread it says that it mainly reduces load times and doesn't affect FPS very much.
