Wait, less load times... so I go from 20 seconds to 10?!

Still makes no sense as the longest thing in the loading is setting up the connection and sychronizing with the server which is fully dependend on the inet connection between the server and your PC.


To clarify my point I will point out the flaws in the article:

So from the sounds of it, any of you that have already tweaked steam to run in low processor affinity through this tweak guide, may see almost no performance gain.

Setting the processor affinity to low means it does not prioritize the program and thus everythign else with a normal affinity level or higher get's priority... so this would only lower your performace.
Also on modern multi core PC's you actually control which core handles what task, standard both cores are set to handle a tasl, but mainly older software might not work as it does not support this, and changing affinity will help most of the time with this.

You could set the process priority higher for a program, which shall have the effect there talking about, but you shall only notice this when running other programs which use up allot of resources which isn't smart in general, most of you don't download while playing a online game and are shocked your lagging right?
It's the same thing basically.


Then there is the point of the Wiki page they are reffering to as a source.

Notice how Windows XP isn't mentioned in here and thus implying the technology isn't implented in there, not to mention that it is talking about adio and not video material.

Since SP1 for Vista you can configure setting to find a balance in the loss of networking performance and gain of adio quality.

as regards setting the processor affinity to low for the steam program itself, i think the point theyre making is that steam itself is a cpu hog, not the games that run through steam,
when youre playing cs/tf2 etc, you are running the game(hl2.exe) + the steam.exe


so if steam is set to low, then there would be more cpu time available for the actual games themselves, as the games would run on a normal affinity level, and thus get priority?

i think thats the point theyre trying to make anyway, who knows?

but yeah, they dont even mention xp, only vista.

im usin this wmp thingy for ages, but i have the feelin that when i set the steam.exe to low that the game is runnin slow aka loadin the maps or connecting to the servers.
some ppl told that u need to set the hl.exe to high and steam.exe to low. Oo
im confused.
