At the time this was published and serialised in the news, they said it was either "trick of the light" or "a funny rock"

Those were the actual words used by the news.
Who knows? It could be anything.

Mars has already proved it has ice, so oxygen has to be present.
There is a small atmosphere, but nothing that can support human life.
There may be mars inhabitants with an adapted respiratory system for that atmosphere, or it could be an animal of some kind.

Richard branson is apparently going to mars soon on his passenger rocket, so maybe he will know
