Gangster ![]() | Hi guys, thought i'd catch the attention of all you computer boffins out there =D i know a little here and there, but here's my problem and here's what i've done to try prevent it so far. A couple of weeks ago, infact, i would say since i started using the computer for gaming abit more, for instance since installing the beta for Warhammer, after about an hour of being on the sound of loud tickingish sounds come from the case (more like a disc trying to be read on a cd player with no joy, or a more famous playstation with a dead laser trying to read a disc) sometime's it would do it the once, there would be a short freeze then everything is fine again, other time's it will do it 4 or 5 time's and then come back on, but everything is glitched, sound has gone funny with weird static sound coming out the speakers, and then the worst 1 which is happening more and more often now is it freezes, the ticking sound goes on for about 7-10 times then a blue screen apears =( I took down the code in the blue screen ( can't find it now lol) and reseacrhed it after reboot and had no joy, so i decided to check the event viewer and see what was said in there, nothing thee either which was weird. So i decided to take all the overclocking off as i thought it could be a possible over heat of CPU or something and the ticking was the sound of the hard drive shutting down after the tempreture threshold was met maybe? anyway took overclocking off, but still it persists, it will sit dormant for days and be fine, but when using it, it starts to play up. last week there was a few errors appear in the event viewer one of which described a failed write to the hard drive saying data may have been lost, had about 7 errors of the same type, so i researched it and apparently it was down to either a faulty cable or the hard drive. So today i've changed the cable, and after having to run the windows repair to stop the shitty blue screen popping up because i unplugged the SATA lead from the motherboard, i started playing tonight and all was fine untill about half hour ago when the ticking happened again and the comp froze, got the weird static sound which have now gone away, i havent rebooted the computer yet, but all seems fine again now. Event viewer info that i just found a minute ago, if anyone has a clue to this i would love to know how to sort it out http:// ![]() ![]() there's loads of the same error in there, also as you can see no log of whats been happening tonight as the last log was more than a day ago for some weird reason. Info about comp: Currently running AMD dual core 3ghz Asus M2N SLI deluxe Hybridpower Asus EN9800GT Giel Black dragon RAM 4GB WD Raptor 74gb 550 watt Q-tec PSU Was built by myself about 4 months ago, upgraded, the HDD PSU and case aren't new, as i say no problems untill a few weeks ago. ThE NaMeLeSs ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() My Mood: | From the sound description, i think it could be more likely a cable in a fan (maype PSU fan) which blocks and leads to an overheat. Also when you say your hdd makes noises too. maybe try and get a mate's hdd to check if with another hdd also noise comes out. If you have some case fans, try to unplug them for a while (pc shouldn't overheat) and look aswell if still noise is there. I hope with this write and read errors on your hdd aren't the same which i had, otherwise, hf @ re-install windows......or hope the "high-class-pc-pros" here can(and will) give you better and more infos ![]() and on a side note, i like the setup, its nearly like mys, and will be even more like after my next upgrade.

Gangster ![]() | Hey guys cheers for the input here, i'm 99% sure the sound is from the HDD as the sound is coming from it's area and there are no leads etc touching fans, all fans are running fine without wobble or any other instability, BIOS shows them all running at normal speeds aswell, along with the errors i've already seen i'm concluding the HDD as the culprit...but there allways that something that may have been missed lol which is why i say 99% sure =P Anyway thanks Security, here's the result anywho, i'm guessing 1 block is a sector? if so reporting 2 bad sectors, ran the XP error check and finds nothing so i'm guessing there just too kacnkered to be read or something? lol this is where i'm not good with computers heh. ![]() ![]() Cheers again =) |

The special little boy ![]() ![]() ![]() My Mood: | Yeah your HDD has 2 bad sectors. So the ticking is from it, and this thing is like ****** for your HDD... it is only a matter of time till it breaks completely. I suggest contacting Western Digital about this since your HDD is basically broken.

Gangster ![]() | Bummer =( Thank you anyway, saved me alot of messing around! well i shall contact, WD as i'm fairly sure i've owned this particular HDD for about 4 years so should still be under warranty, but will need to check my papers to see if it came with a 5 year warranty at that time, knowing my luck not lol. Untill then i shall get all my stuff i need off it and use it till death =( |

Gangster ![]() | Unfortunatly wasn't under warranty =( Just had to fresh install XP aswell as the not long after talking to you guys the comp BSODd and then on reboot ran the error check, and was unable to stop it as the keyboard didn't kick in with the error check so was unable to press a key to cancel, after that i was getting the BSOD after the XP loading bar screen had disapeared, so tryed another XP repair however this time after getting to the partition screen it said the partition was unknown therefor no repair option was offered, also said it was empty, which wasn't a good sign, the XP boot was still there however so i tried a FIXBOOT and nothing rewrote the MBR and still no joy, tryed again hoping the partition would be back up, but no luck =( Well resintalled now, all is back up and running, but it is deffinatly under stress now as it will not let me run a defrag as it says there are inconsitencies on the drive and to run the error check again, of which i won't do after last time, also the HDtune programme is now showing 7 bad sectors, i'll take my chances for now, so i'm using it lightly till tomorrow, i've just ordered a cheap barracuda for now to keep me going till the end of the year where i may purchase another raptor because i will say i loved it, served me well and is a far better performer than a bog standard 7k rpm drive. Cheers for the info =) Last edited by AzTr!cKy^; 07-10-2008 at 07:43 AM. |
